Santee

Niobrara

Located on Nebraska's north shore, Niobrara was founded in 1856, at the confluence of the Niobrara and Missouri Rivers. On the historic Lewis and Clark Trail and the Scenic Byway Outlaw Trail of Highway 12, the town is home to Niobrara State Park. The scenic Lewis and Clark Lake is also nearby. The Chief Standing Bear Bridge over the Missouri River leading to the Dakotas has been open since 1998. Much history of the American West has passed through Niobrara. Verdigre

This picturesque village, part of the locally known "Bohemian Alps", is the site of the Annual Kolache Days Czech Festival in June. This festival features ethnic meals, Czech music, polka dances and a parade. St. Wenceslaus Catholic church is a beautiful Romanesque restoration. Chalupnik Veterans Park and Wildwood Acres Park provide a restful place for a picnic, camping with hookups, swimming pool and museum. Deer, turkey and pheasant hunting abound in the area. Royal

Royal is located five miles west of Highway 14 and 20 Junction. This community is home of ZOO Nebraska featuring tigers, wolves, cougars, foxes, monkeys and so much more. Also find Ashfall Fossil Beds located two miles west and seven north of Royal (402)893-2000, or Grove Lake Wildlife Area and Trout Hatchery two miles north of Royal.

Neligh

Wonderful points of interest are the Neligh Mills State Historical Site, the Pierson Wildlife Learning Center, the outstanding Indian collection and pioneer exhibit at the Antelope County Museum and the Ponca Trail of Tears historic marker and gravesite. Enjoy hiking and biking along the 321 mile long Cowboy Trail, two city parks, and the "Singing Bridge" National Historic Bridge. Elgin

Elgin is known as "Vetch Capital" of the nation for seed production of this soil-building legume. It has a City Park and Centennial Garden featuring a bronze sculpture of noted artist, Herb Mignery. Elgin is also home of Plantation House, a century old southern style mansion of 26 rooms. Celebrate Vetch Day's in June, Family Music Festival in July, and Craft Festival in October. Raeville

Two miles east of Highway 14, Raeville was a stopping spot on the historical Orphan Train. The twin 100 foot towers of St. Bonaventure's Catholic Church dominate the countryside. Seating over 600, this Romanesque structure contains beautiful stained glass windows and paintings and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Petersburg

Nebraska Community Improvement Award participant and winner for many years, Petersburg is near the picturesque Beaver Valley. It is site of the Logan Fontanelle Monument where this famous Omaha Indian Chief was killed in 1855. Petersburg is home to two public parks and Olson Nature Preserve, with an abundance of wildlife, water, trees and scenery. Highlights are the annual Nebraska State Antique Tractor and Horse Plowing Bee, and Rae Valley Old Threshers Reunion in August. Petersburg borders on ranch and cattle country. Albion

The center of Boone County, Albion, known as the "Gateway to the Sandhills", offers several activities throughout the whole year for the all around traverler. Fuller Park has accommodations which include outdoor pool, restroom/shower facilities, and ten camping spots with electricity and water hookups. Near the park are the Boone County Museum and the fairgrounds which features car races every Friday night through the summer. Albion is also home to a nine hole golf course, hunting, bed-n-breakfast, historical homes, champion trees, movie theatre, the Boone County Fair which is held in late July, a large sports complex, and an indoor fitness center. Fullerton

Located at the confluence of the Loup and Cedar Rivers, Fullerton offers exceptional golfing, canoeing, camping, fishing, hunting and equestrian trail riding. The town offers an annual 4th of July Celebration, Twin River Cruisers Car Show in July, and Old Fashioned Christmas celebration the first Friday of December. Central City

Known today as the "Wedding Capital of Nebraska", this is a historic crossroads community where the old Oregon, California and Mormon Trails cross Highway 14 near the Platte River. It is also junction with historic Lincoln Highway (U.S. 30) and Union Pacific Railroad. Central City is home of novelist Wright Morris and Merrick County Historical Museum. Lone Tree Pioneer Monument is located nearby. Central City celebrates Lone Tree Days in July and Merrick County Fair in August. Aurora

Located just two miles north of I-80 on exit 332, Aurora is the largest community along Highway 14. Aurora is home to the Edgerton Explorit Center and the Plainsman Museum. Visitors can enjoy scenes from yesterday as they shop in Aurora's historic downtown square. The Leadership Center, located on East Highway 34, is the perfect meeting spot for retreats and reunions. Camping is available in Streeter's Park in Aurora and at Bader Park 9 miles north and 9 miles West along the Platte River. Annual A-ROR-N Days Celebration is held the fourth weekend in June. Clay Center

Clay Center is located in the heart of Nebraska's Rainwater Basin where millions of waterfowl stop and feed on their yearly migration north. The Spring Wing Ding in March celebrates this facinating migration spectacle; a bird watcher's paradise. Enjoy the Clay County Fair in July or picnic at the city park. Old Trusty Days in September celebrates "the way it was" in Nebraska. Attend the festive Christmas program at Clay County Museum. Edgar

Four miles east of Highway 14, Edgar is the home of the Sugar Shack Country Candle Company. Enjoy pheasant hunting in the ample harvested corn and milo fields and deer hunting along the Sandy Creek and the Little Blue River. A marker for the first timber claim in the United States is located one mile west of town. EdgarFest celebration is the last Saturday of June, and the December Festival of Trees welcomes Santa's visit to town. For more information, call the City Office at (402)224-5145

Nelson

Nelson is home of the Nuckolls County Seat and the historic 1890 courthouse. The entire community turns out for the annual Fourth of July Fun Day and the Nuckolls County Fair in mid July. The exciting annual Community Club Variety Show is the third weekend of April. Turkey, pheasant and deer hunting abounds. For more information, call the city office at (402)225-4401.

Superior

Known as the Victorian Capital of Nebraska, the town hosts the Victorian Festival every Memorial Day weekend, honoring Lady Vestey, Superior native, Evelyn Brodstone. She began a career as a $12 per week stenographer and rose to be the highest paid woman executive in the world in 1918 with an annual $250,000 salary with the Vestey Cold Storage Company in Chicago. In 1924, she became Lady Evelene Vestey following her marriage to Lord William Vestey, a company owner. Superior has many unique stores carrying antiques, handicraft arts, collectibles and gift items. It is also the home to two parks with a total of forty acres of woodlands, swimming, playgrounds, picnic areas, disc golf and the Nuckolls County Museum. You will find excellent outdoor recreation at Lovewell Reservoir eight miles south of Superior, and the golf course two miles north.
